Morehouse School of Medicine Students Protest Commencement Speaker

Students at Morehouse School of Medicine join wave of HBCU protests of GOP-backed commencement speakersAs graduation season heats up across the country, a group of students at Morehouse School of Medicine is making headlines for their bold stance against one of their own. Rep. Rich McCormick, a Republican from Georgia and first graduate of the school to be elected to Congress, has been selected as this year's commencement speaker. But not everyone is thrilled with the choice.

Students Speak Out Against McCormick
A petition signed by over 1,100 students and alumni argues that McCormick's views and voting record in Congress are at odds with the school's mission to improve the well-being of people and increase diversity in a field where Black individuals are woefully underrepresented. Kiara Huff, a student at MSM, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 'As future physicians, we realize that we're going to interact with diverse patients who have different perspectives, but we feel that someone who's championing us on our graduation day and giving us a charge to move forward with the future should also uphold our values and morals.'

McCormick Responds to Protests
Despite the backlash, McCormick remains committed to delivering the commencement speech. In a statement obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, he said, 'I plan to deliver the speech to honor my alma mater, celebrate the graduates' achievements, and continue a tradition I've been part of before. My character and contributions should be judged on merit, not politics or appearance.' McCormick has also spoken at his alma mater before, serving as student body president during his time there.

A History of HBCU Commencement Controversies
This isn't the first time an HBCU commencement speaker has been met with protests. Last year, students at South Carolina State University were originally set to have Pamela Evette, the state's Lt. Governor, serve as speaker. However, due to increased student backlash, the school informed students that Evette would not be speaking, citing security concerns. McCormick's selection as commencement speaker has sparked a similar reaction from students and alumni at Morehouse School of Medicine.

The controversy surrounding Rep. Rich McCormick's selection as commencement speaker at Morehouse School of Medicine highlights the complexities of balancing tradition with student voices and values. As graduation season continues, it will be interesting to see how other HBCUs navigate similar challenges. One thing is clear: the students at MSM are making their voices heard, and they won't back down without a fight.
