Colonialism and the "Amalgamation" (1851 – 1960)
​The British arrived looking for palm oil and trade, but eventually took total control.
​The Fall of Empires: In 1897, the British famously sacked Benin City. By 1903, the Sokoto Caliphate was conquered.
​1914 Amalgamation: Lord Frederick Lugard joined the Northern and Southern Protectorates into one country. This was done primarily for British administrative convenience, despite the regions having very different cultures and religions.
​The Nationalist Movement: After WWII, leaders like Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo, and Ahmadu Bello pressured Britain for self-rule.
